At The Nurtured Mind our Restorative yoga practice is geared toward allowing participants to enjoy a more healing and recuperative experience. This non-ambitious type of practice involves holding a few simple poses to achieve a deep level of relaxation.

All of our meditation classes begin with a restorative yoga sequence that can be easily adjusted to fit in with any level of experience.

Here are some of the benefits practicing restorative yoga at The Nurtured Mind has to offer you:

Slow Down Speed Demon

Restorative yoga is an excellent opportunity to disconnect from the  chaos of daily life and let your speedometer return to 0 mph. Moving slowly through the poses allows you to explore your mind and body at a steady, natural tempo. This helps to prepare ones mind and body for the inward journey of meditation and deepened awareness.

Rock-A-Bye Nervous System

The slower pace and deep breathing that you get in a restorative yoga class triggers the parasympathetic nervous system from. This activation helps counter the effects of the regular fight-or-flight stress response that can be damaging to your physiology and well-being. The overall calming effect on the nervous system sets a deeply relaxing tone for the class that comforts your mind, body and spirit.

Mind-FUL-ness vs Mind-LESS-ness

We sometime call our style of practice at The Nurtured Mind “mindful yoga” due to the expanded awareness of self and body that naturally occurs when we practice. Slower movements cultivate a deeper understanding of the poses and the breath. Awareness of the physical sensations, the thoughts or emotions that arise, or sounds in the environment, can all lead you to experiencing a much more profound level of overall well-being after class.

Make Me One with Everything

At The Nurtured Mind our restorative yoga practice always focuses on participants cultivating a deeper level of appreciation of their bodies strengths and weaknesses. This way, any insight around what you know is right for your body can be integrated into your practice and a more profound sense of self-love and acceptance can emerge. The comfortable, relaxed pace of restorative yoga opens the doorway to a deeper understanding of your own body. This passage of knowledge lets experience what it actually means to be a “spiritual being having a human experience.”

Insider Job

The subdued quality of a restorative yoga class often helps you draw attention inward and away from events and situations of the external world. With your awareness directed within, the practice becomes a sanctuary for the mind and spirit. From this vantage point you can take a deeper look at who you are and what you really need. Restorative yoga opens us up to new levels of self-exploration and contemplation, allowing your inner being to shine brighter than ever.

Move with Meaning

Through the mindfulness of the practice, you become increasingly aware of your actions, and how they influence your level of comfort or discomfort. You can see the direct cause and effect relationship between your poses, breathing, and overall sense of well-being. As this experience continues to deepen, you begin to make more deliberate and attentive choices, both on and off the mat.

It is What it is

By its very nature, restorative yoga practice At The Nurtured Mind renounces the “no-pain-no-gain” mentality. We believe participants receive the greatest benefits from their practice not through forcing themselves into a pose, but by releasing and surrendering to it. This mentality helps to cultivate acceptance of ones body and its inherent limitations. Furthermore, it strengthens your ability to let go of preconceived notions of your body and how you think it should look or feel, both in and out of a pose. When increased ease and comfort are the theme of your yoga practice, acceptance and detachment naturally emerge as a result. Fostering this attitude is of immense importance when wanting to harness any tangible benefits from practicing meditation.

Welcome Within

In daily life it’s easy for all of us to get pulled into a false sense of insecurity. Many people move through their days haunted by fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. Restorative yoga provides you with a safe harbor wherein you can reconnect with your true nature, which is innocent, pure, nourishing and ultimately invincible! Making a solid connection between your poses, breathing, and deep relaxation will restore the memory of who you truly are and helps you in the quest of reclaiming your fearless nature. From this perspective, you emerge feeling secure in the inherent goodness within you and in the world around you.
